Understanding the material
The useful specification depends on the resin’s intended role. A tackifying resin is selected for compatibility and bonding performance, while a curing resin must match a defined reaction and processing system. Similar colour or softening behaviour does not establish interchangeability. Specify the current grade or intended function when requesting an alternative.

Identity and published standard
Phenolic resin — grade-specific technical specification
Published manufacturer information distinguishes reactive phenolic resins from other industrial resin functions. A named example such as SP-1045 illustrates a particular grade, not a universal specification for all phenolic resin. Acceptance should follow the selected grade’s TDS and quality specification.

Adhesive modification
Selected phenolic grades can be evaluated with compatible rubber or resin systems. Assess tack, initial bonding and conditioned performance in the complete adhesive.
Rubber curing systems
Specific reactive phenolic resins are used in appropriate rubber formulations. The exact resin chemistry and cure system must be matched to the process.
Industrial binder development
Other phenolic grades serve binder functions. Identify the intended application and processing conditions before comparing candidate materials.
Phenolic resin families and functions
| Grade / form | Main distinction | Selection consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Resole-type resin | Reactive chemistry with grade-specific cure behaviour | Match the required process and application. |
| Novolac-type resin | Different structure and curing requirements | Specify the compatible cure system where relevant. |
| Modified adhesive resin | Chemistry selected for adhesive compatibility | Do not substitute a rubber-curing resin solely by name. |
Formulation & processing
Define the resin’s job
State whether the requirement is tackification, heat-performance modification, curing or binding. The role narrows the meaningful grade comparison.
Match compatibility and processing
Check dissolution, dispersion and compatibility with the main polymer. Evaluate viscosity and stability after the complete formulation has been prepared.
Control reactive behaviour
For curing applications, use the prescribed processing conditions and compatible components. Review residual phenol/formaldehyde and handling guidance in the current documentation.
What to check in the specification
- Resole, novolac or modified resin chemistry
- Softening point or solution viscosity, as applicable
- Free phenol/formaldehyde and relevant volatile content
- Compatibility and cure or heat-performance requirements

Packing and quotation details
Discuss the required net weight, sample quantity and delivery schedule with SBS. Packaging should be compatible with the material and carry product, manufacturer and batch identification. Confirm the offered pack size and shelf-life or retest information in the quotation; these depend on the selected grade.
Storage and safe handling
Keep the material in compatible, closed packaging under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. Use the current SDS to set ventilation, personal protection and fire precautions; storage and shelf life depend on formulation.
Frequently asked questions
Is every phenolic resin an adhesive tackifier?
No. The family includes reactive curing and other binder grades with different functions.
Can a resin be selected by softening point alone?
No. Chemistry, compatibility, reactivity and relevant impurity limits also matter.
What helps identify an equivalent product?
Provide the existing grade, intended function, main polymer, process conditions and required finished-product performance.
