Alkyd Resin

Oil-modified polyester binders for coatings, enamels and primers

Alkyd Resin is an oil- or fatty-acid-modified polyester used as a binder in selected coating systems. Oil length, modification and supplied solvent influence application, drying and film properties. Long-, medium- and short-oil grades serve different formulation needs and should be specified by grade rather than by resin family alone.

Product overview

Understanding the material

A useful alkyd-resin enquiry connects the binder to the intended coating and cure process. Solids, viscosity and solvent composition affect application, while resin chemistry and the full formulation influence drying, hardness and flexibility. Air-drying, baking and water-reducible systems require different grade choices. Compare data on equivalent solids and test conditions.

Identity and published standard

Alkyd resin — published manufacturer grade data

Published alkyd product tables describe grades by solids, solvent, viscosity, acid value, colour and oil type. These are grade-specific specifications, not one universal alkyd composition. Use the selected grade’s current TDS and quality documentation to establish acceptance.

Applications & functional benefits

01

Enamels and general coatings

Suitable alkyd grades can form the binder in enamel formulations. Choose the grade for application method, appearance and service conditions.

02

Primers and industrial finishes

Selected systems can be evaluated for primers and industrial coatings. Adhesion, corrosion performance and overcoating behaviour belong to the finished formulation assessment.

03

Modified coating development

Modified or water-reducible alkyds require a compatible formulation route. Confirm the specified carrier, neutralisation or curing requirements for the selected material.

Choose the right material

Oil length and coating-system selection

Grade / formMain distinctionSelection consideration
Long-oil alkydHigher oil modification within the alkyd familyOften considered for suitable air-drying coating systems.
Medium / short-oil gradeDifferent balance of resin and oil characteristicsSelect for the target film and curing process.
Modified / water-reducible gradeAdditional chemistry or carrier compatibilityUse the corresponding formulation and processing route.
Manufacturing considerations

Formulation & processing

Compare equivalent resin concentrations

Two supplied grades may have different solids or solvents. Compare viscosity and binder contribution on a consistent basis before considering substitution.

Build the complete drying system

Drying behaviour depends on resin chemistry and the full coating formulation. Validate the relevant film tests under the intended application and curing conditions.

Assess pigment and binder compatibility

Check dispersion stability, colour, gloss and film properties with the actual pigments and additives. Small-scale compatibility trials should precede a production change.

Quality review

What to check in the specification

  • Oil length and oil/fatty-acid type
  • Solids, solvent composition and viscosity
  • Acid value and colour
  • Drying/cure mechanism and compatibility with other binders

Supply & handling

Packing, storage & handling

Packing and quotation details

Discuss the required net weight, sample quantity and delivery schedule with SBS. Packaging should be compatible with the material and carry product, manufacturer and batch identification. Confirm the offered pack size and shelf-life or retest information in the quotation; these depend on the selected grade.

Storage and safe handling

Keep the material in compatible, closed packaging under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. Use the current SDS to set ventilation, personal protection and fire precautions; storage and shelf life depend on formulation.

Product questions

Frequently asked questions

Does oil length describe the supplied solids percentage?

No. Oil length concerns resin composition; supplied solids describes the non-volatile fraction of the delivered product.

Are all alkyd resins air drying?

No. Resin chemistry and the intended curing system differ by grade.

What details should be included in an enquiry?

Provide coating type, application method, oil length or current grade, solids, solvent, cure conditions and target film properties.
